The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is a Federal government agency, created in 1934 to assist the three branches of Government with the cataloging and storage of documents. Today, NARA is so much more! NARA: operates a nationwide network of regional facilities at which staff accession, arrange, describe, preserve, and provide access to essential documentation; is a leading voice in setting standards for archives around the world; manages the Presidential libraries and museums, is a world leader in electronic records management and preservation; assists the Information Security Oversight Office in its management of Federal classification and declassification policies and prepares the Federal Register (the Federal Government's daily newspaper).

An internship at the National Archives is an opportunity to participate in a first-rate, hands-on experience as it relates to your potential career and the knowledge you gain will be invaluable.

Photos and Comments

The project was to evaluate and make suggestions for the website; the rest of the week was spent meeting/talking with NARA staff and touring other libraries/archives in dc. We also did a few other minor projects on the fly. Everyone was really pleased to have us there, and willing to talk about themselves; how they got there and what they do.

I love the national archives, love what they do there. I learned a lot about how congressional records are processed, stored and retrieved, more than I could have learned in a class.

Our direct supervisor …was awesome, she planned our whole week and made sure we had lots of cool stuff planned, she walked us everywhere and introduced us and was way nice.

This certainly differed from my expectations, but in a positive way. I had the opportunity to process a collection of papers (as described in the job description) but also to help in the selection of materials for the Public Vaults exhibit and the 75th Anniversary Coffee Table book.

The artifacts I got to see was the most extraordinary experience. I will keep those memories for the rest of my life. I got to see the original Japanese surrender; Adolf Hitler’s last will and testament, marriage certificate to Eva Braun, and his final policy statement on the third Reich; Lee Harvey Oswald's rifle, Jackie O's clothes; copies of the Declaration of Independence and so much more.

Center for Legislative Archives

Intern: Malisa Lewis, Sarah Raezler

Code: NARADC-01

The Center for Legislative Archives offers a unique experience as an executive branch entity with legislative branch responsibilities. As the custodian of the official records of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, we work closely with Hill administrators and committee staff on a wide variety of records issues related to current and closed records. We also provide reference assistance to the public on the open records of Congress. The students would be able to observe and participate in the daily activities of the Center. They would gain experience in archival description, create on-line finding aids, and assist with researcher requests. They would also become familiar with some of the archival and institutional challenges the Center faces which may suggest areas of research they could pursue in their program. This week-long opportunity through ASBP will help promote the Center's longer-term internship program, and we hope that University of Michigan students will be interested in applying for one of the open intern slots in the future.

The student who chooses this project will have their choice of assisgnments: Process specific materials in our Polar Archives Collection. The Polar Archives Collection is one of the few donated collections that the National Archives holds and includes materials relating to a variety of polar explorers - including Perry and Paul Siple. The collections include textual records artifacts photographs and carvings. The student would complete as many of the steps involved in archival processing during his or her week as possible. These steps would include arranging the materials; re-housing documents into acid-free boxes; determining if custom housing is needed; determining if conservation is needed; and writing a description of the materials for our online Archival Research Catalog (ARC). The student would be working with a senior supervisory archivist throughout the process. OR... Complete historical research on an item in our vault. This would include using a variety of outside sources as well record at the National Archives to find information about the assigned item. (These items are primarily from the records of the Department of State (RG 59)). The student would be working with a senior supervisory archivist throughout the process.
