Outstanding Renewal Enterprises, Inc., d/b/a Lower East Side Ecology Center (LESEC), is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located on the lower east side of Manhattan. Our mission has three main objectives: 1) Stewardship of public open spaces 2) Increasing community awareness, involvement and activism through environmental education and 3) Recycling and composting. While carrying out these objectives, LESEC has always worked to emphasize local resources and local participation.

The organization was founded in 1987 as a community-based recycling program before the New York City Department of Sanitation had curbside recycling programs. In the last 21 years, we have expanded the scope of our programs to include compost collection and education, electronics recycling, environmental education, and stewardship of public open spaces. Our main goal is to encourage New Yorkers to learn about and implement urban sustainability strategies by “pushing the envelope” for environmentalism in New York City.

Participant Comments

"I scanned the press of LESEC and make a list of their website's hierarchy. The staff was very nice and easy-going. I really liked experiencing this kind of work place, which was very casual and everyone cooperated with each other. They also introduced different projects to me not only in their office. I really had a very interesting and fun internship.

I loved going to visit their numerous gardens and do some easy composting, which was my first experience. I had never known there were so many small gardens in NYC before I went to these gardens. "

The Lower East Side Ecology Center is working with the Taproot Foundation to re-vamp LESEC's website (www.lesecologycenter.org) with the goal of going live in the spring of 2009. In preparation for going live we will need to edit the current content of our website develop new content and organize and proof the content and materials that will go onto the web. The SI ASB intern will help with all of these areas with his/her main role being ensuring the consistency of all of the material.

The SI Alternative Spring Break is open to graduate students of the University of Michigan's School of Information. Undergraduates looking for Alternative Spring Break opportunities should look into the University of Michigan Alternative Spring Break program administered by U-M's Ginsberg Center.
