WRAIR's focus on research for the soldiers affects all aspects of its operations because military medical research priorities differ from those of the civilian sector. WRAIR scientists have a unique understanding of military operations and environments, including the stresses and exposures troops encounter and the performance requirements of a deployed military force. Despite WRAIR's focus on the military, its research has been used to solve nonmilitary medical problems around the world. Its history is filled with the life-saving or life-enhancing discoveries of distinguished scientists.

I worked on user interview and did a site analysis on their library page. The people were nice and the usability portion of work was interesting

Customer Feedback

A fourth project is to assist me with gathering customer data via both electronic survey and focus group about how much our services are valued and used. I have designed some electronic survey tools to try to quantify what we save our researchers in time and what kinds of funds we assist them with obtaining. My primary research interest is information seeking behaviors and the better I understand my customers' information seeking needs the more likely I will be able to fulfill them and to anticipate future needs. A second part of this project would be to evaluate our new web portal with specific customers and identify its web-usability. I would really require a student with web usability skills to be able to design a standardized set of questions to take customers through our web portal and see if it is laid out optimally for the researchers' needs.

Qualification: Electronic survey design and testing interpersonal skills focus group skills. For the second part of this project I would really require a student with web usability skills to be able to design a standardized set of questions to take customers through our web portal and see if it is laid out optimally for the researchers' needs.

Citation Analysis of Journal Collection

Another project would be to validate the current journal collection using Thomson's Local Journal Usage Report (LJUR) data set to determine which journals are cited the most in our local collection. I have also purchased this data set from Thomson. By determining which journal titles our scientists either cite or publish in we can determine which titles to continue carrying and which to drop. (This project may be completed in January depending on staffing and resources.)

Qualification: Excel Access critical thinking skills citation analysis.

Determine impact of WRAIR/NMRC research on science

Another project is to assist in organizational strategic planning and management. One thing I see as critical that the library can provide to the strategic planning process and which can later be used in marketing materials is the organization's impact on science. I have purchased the Thomson data sets for this purpose and plan to deliver to the parent organization a complete analysis of the organization's impact on science by sometime in February. The Thomson data sets are the papers of every WRAIR/NMRC scientist over the past 30 years as well as the citing papers. By seeing how often our scientists' work is cited and where we can determine percentile placement and impact in specific scientific disciplines. Student under guidance will take on the crunching of the data to determine the organization's impact on science it would enable the student to see that libraries and bibliometric data matter far beyond the library door. Here is a link to the fact sheet describing the data sets and how they can be used: http://in-cites.com/rsg/interfaces_samples/xite/ICRfactsheet.pdf Student will contact the Thomson company with any unique questions that arise as the project moves forward.

Qualification: Knowledge of access problem solving critical thinking

Evaluation of various citation management systems

A fifth project that I think would market the library in the research institution setting would be evaluating various citation management systems to offer our researchers the best tools for their immediate needs whether that be to create bibliographies for their publications or to share articles with collaborators. I would like an evaluation of Zotero CiteULike EndNote Web EndNote for the Desktop and Quosa (and any others the student may recommend). From this evaluation I would like classes to spring for our researchers so that as the library staff or your student interact with the researchers they can make informed recommendations and set up special individualized or small group training sessions. One of our organization's strategic goals is to increase the number of publications per year. I see this effort as one that the library can contribute towards accomplishing that strategic goal.

Qualification: Ability to compare systems see potential uses of each system beyond what is currently being employed work with web 2.0 technologies design handout and web-based course materials to present each of the citation management systems with strengths and weaknesses.

Installation of Web of Science Backfiles and Journal Citation Reports

Code: WRAIR-05

Installation and set up of Web of Science complete with full text linking. The organization did not have Web of Science which offers so many critical measures for a research organization. Hence this will shortly be purchased and turned on with 30 years of backfiles and Journal Citation Reports. Web of Science will create an ideal interface for one stop shopping to retrieve full text and citation analysis statistics so student will be responsible for linking all full text that the library subscribes to as well as free full text to Web of Science. This can be quickly populated so I see the intern's further responsibility to test the results to ensure that all the titles are working. This also includes incorporation of Web 2.0 technologies to reveal licensed content in other applications using COiNS in AJAX.

Qualification: Ability to troubleshoot any problems with electronic resources work with vendor and staff reveal licensed content. If student has the ability to code a web 2.0 technology that can work in concert with Web of Science to reveal licensed content when user is elsewhere on the web such as at Amazon or Google Scholar using COiNS AJAX or other coding technology this is welcome! Familiarity with internet security issues necessary to execute Web 2.0 technologies in a responsible manner.

Upgrade of Voyager ILS from version 6 to version 7

The Voyager Integrated Library System (ILS) by Ex Libris is used by the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. It has been on the version 6.0 platform and version 7.0 is now released and available for customers to upgrade. The server is hosted at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. The project requires obtaining and reading the documentation and being very familiar with network architecture and software in order to perform the upgrade. Must ensure that all data on the system is not lost in the upgrade.

Qualification: Must have strong UNIX and Oracle skills. Network architecture and some network administration skills required. Software installation and de-installation skills on a commercial system affecting many end - users. Must have the ability to trouble-shoot and solve problems related to software and hardware and the ability to interface upgraded system with Access database, and work with odcb drivers.
