The Office of Legislative and Public Affairs (OLPA) communicates information about the activities, programs, research results and policies of the National Science Foundation. OLPA employs a wide variety of tools and techniques to engage the general public and selected audiences including Congress, the news media, state and local governments, other Federal agencies, and the research and education communities.

OLPA has five sections that provide information about the NSF's science and engineering research and education: Congressional Affairs, Media and Public Information, Communications Resources, Issues Development, and Special Projects.

I processed one donation, and began processing another. I liked the actual content of what I was working with: it was a lot of materials from the NSF's Office of Polar Programs, and most of the stuff dealt with the Antarctic program. It was really fascinating, especially since some of the material consisted of slides (the kind that you have to view in a slide projector) that the person had taken on visits to the US stations in Antarctica.

The NSF Historical Collections has recently received collections from two retired staff members: one was responsible for Antarctic facilities; one was responsible for international activities with a focus on science in the Americas. The collections include work diaries publications photographs memoranda correspondence and personal material. Students will assist the NSF Historian in unpacking and sorting the material evaluating it for historical significance and beginning the process of gaining physical and intellectual control over the printed manuscript and photographic records. This project should appeal especially to students with an interest in science or science policy.

The SI Alternative Spring Break is open to graduate students of the University of Michigan's School of Information. Undergraduates looking for Alternative Spring Break opportunities should look into the University of Michigan Alternative Spring Break program administered by U-M's Ginsberg Center.
