The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) is the principal repository for rare books, manuscripts, and archives in the University of Chicago Library. Information about the collections is available at http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/spcl/colls.html. The collections include 265,000 books and 35,000 linear feet of archives and manuscripts. Special Collections provides primary sources to stimulate, enrich, and support research, teaching, learning, and administration at the University of Chicago. In collaboration with Library and academic computing staff and faculty, Special Collections has produced several digital collections, including Archival Photographic Files (http://photofiles.lib.uchicago.edu/), Chopin Early Editions (http://chopin.lib.uchicago.edu/), and the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae (http://speculum.lib.uchicago.edu/). Special Collections makes its resources available to a broad research constituency, in support of the University's engagement with the larger scholarly community. |

| Students who participated in ASB at the University of Chicago: Marc Levitt. |
"I created online electronic finding aids (EAD) via cut and pasting into a template from an older finding aid (.doc) and spent a day learning about metadata encoding on the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI); basically, filling in XML headings w/an editor. What was best about this experience was that it really helped me focus on what I should pursue here at UM in my remaining time. Everyone was friendly and helpful, and I certainly felt welcome." |

Our project will involve a student who is interested in metadata, particularly in an archival setting. The student will work with staff in our archives/manuscripts unit to provide Encoded Archival Description (EAD) encoding of manuscripts from our history of science archival manuscripts holdings. The student will also assist our digital specialist in performing Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) encoding as part of an on-going project to digitize our Edgar J. Goodspeed Collection of New Testament Manuscripts. For more information about the Goodspeed collection, including examples of digitized manuscripts, please see our web page: http://goodspeed.lib.uchicago.edu/ The student should have an interest in various forms of metadata and working with archival or manuscript material. | ||
