John G. Shedd Aquarium Library 1200 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, IL 60605 |
Projects 2 |
At Shedd Aquarium, animals connect you to the living world, inspiring you to make a difference. That's our mission. This is how we fulfill it: We're cool teachers, creating experiences in which learning is fun. We're dedicated stewards, caring for animals, people and the living world. We're great managers, running a model organization. And it goes deeper, to the fundamental ways in which we act towards our guests and each other: Teach and learn something every day. Create an environment of fun. Be a connection to the collection. Be courageously creative. Be passionate. Whatever the job - feeding the fishes, training the whales, teaching a class, answering a guest's question, creating a menu, planting a garden, sweeping the floor - we do it with a sense of stewardship, quality, integrity and respect. Count on it. Shedd Aquarium has accreditation and membership with industry-leading organizations. |

Students who participated in ASB at Shedd Aquarium: Dominique Daniel, and Lauren Plews. "I cataloged new items and went through a video collection to assess whether or not each item should be added to the library. I loved the location and the person I worked for. It was great to see a special collection librarian's daily activity. It has helped me decide what I think I want to do in the future." "It was wonderful. I think it would a great place to work. They were very happy to have me there and I felt that the work i did was appreciated." |

The Shedd Library seeks to improve the effectiveness of all Shedd Aquarium staff by connecting them to high-quality information resources. The Library provides research assistance, interlibrary loan services, and journal routing to staff, interns, and volunteers. Students interested in learning the overall operations of a small, special collections library will be a good match for the Shedd Library. The Shedd Library is currently conducting an archival survey of over 100 cartons of materials that will eventually form the Shedd Archive. One student will assist the librarian with the archival survey. Each box must be labeled and the contents evaluated, recorded, and any immediate preservation needs met. Contents of the archive include photographs, negatives, glass slides, files, equipment, news clippings, and other items of historical significance to the Aquarium. This opportunity is ideal for a student who has completed at least one archiving or preservation course. | ||
